About this collection

This collection highlights the contributions of Dr. Charles Holmes Herty to the turpentine industry of the south. In 1901, Herty revolutionized the naval stores industry with his cup-and-gutter method of collecting turpentine. Previously, pine trees were butchered or cut as turpentine was collected. Herty developed his cup-and-gutter method in Statesboro, on the site where Georgia Southern University now stands.
